Laser cutters operate by directing the output of a high-power laser through a series of moving mirrors, guided by CNC (computer numerical control) code, and through a lens that focuses the light to an intensity sufficient for vaporizing material. This process can be controlled to CUT all the way through a sheet material, ETCH (cut in far enough to make a mark) or FILL a shape or raster image (scan the laser back and forth until the shape is filled).
